The Squarespace Blog
When I re-designed Squarespace for the most recent time, all our sub sites ( blog, manual, service etc. ) got the same style. Consistency is great, but when it comes to our blog, I felt like it needed to be something special, we started as a blogging software company for crying out loud.
At the time, we were really proud, and still are, of the fact that our software is handmade in New York City. I remembered seeing some great old designs and pictures from 1920's New York and thought that would be a great place to start for some inspiration. Below is what I came up with, you can actually still see it live at www.blog2.squarespace.com
I started out doing some quick mock ups of some more clean, modern styles to really showcase the content. I wanted the design to be very clever, not over designed. I really like sites that use design in creative ways that don't jump out and slap you in face, they rather, buy you a drink or two, take you to dinner then after you are halfway through dessert you realize you kind of like them.
After a few failed comps, I decided to clear my head and start from scratch. Got out some paper and my trusty PITT pen and started sketching. I wanted a clean timeless look. I stripped out all the fluffy graphics and tried to convey a really flat, technical, detail rich design, you know, like Squarespace :) I have always been wanting to do a grayscale design with yellow as the highlight color, don't ask me why, but I was and still am in love with that color scheme.
I made a handful of tweaks from the above comp to the actual live site you see today and had one lovely fight with ie on a few things, but other than that this site still remains one of my most favorite designs to date.
